Sustainability Certification

Oak at Hafner Vineyard in Alexander ValleyAs I begin the annual process of self-assessment to renew our Sustainable Certification, it is a time to reflect on all we do to reduce our impact on the environment and to solicit ideas from others as to how we can improve. Although we have been following sustainable practices for years, last year was the first year that we became certified with the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA). Thanks to the CSWA, sustainable practices are now more codified, scored and maintained.

Our Pricing Philosophy

Wine PricingThinking about selling Hafner wine for 30 years, I recently asked Mom and Dad, "What would you say is our pricing philosophy?" "To make an honest living," Mom said. In a business, core convictions that keep one focused and oriented in a consistent manner are a great help. When those business priorities parallel personal ethics, the direction is even clearer. To make “an honest living” in this sense means respecting the wine, our patrons, our staff and the family. At the end of the day, not only do we feel great about the quality of Hafner wine, but also that we are able to offer these wines at such a strong value.

Cover Crop

Insectary blends attract predatory insects and bring vibrant colors to the vineyard. Vineyard sustainability in action!Driving through the Wine Country, you may notice some vineyards are void of any vegetation on the vineyard floor, while others have grass and weeds growing between the rows, and still others are a mixture of these styles with rows alternating between cultivated and uncultivated land. You might also notice that beneath some rows the soil is untilled but bare while others show signs of cultivation. Why is that? Vineyard practices vary from grower to grower. The methods we employ are motivated by our desire to enrich the soil and promote a healthy environment for our vines, thereby preserving the land for generations to come.
