Glass Color

Glass ColorAt Hafner Vineyard, sustainability is at the heart of everything we do from our solar array and electric tractor to the packaging choices we make. Recently, you may have noticed that our Chardonnay bottles look a little darker. That’s because darker glass contains more recycled content, helping us reduce our carbon footprint by using fewer raw materials and less energy. We’ve long sourced American-made bottles to cut transportation emissions and support domestic manufacturing, and we’re also exploring lighter weight bottles to further lower shipping impacts. Since 1982, our Chardonnay has stayed the same. Now, the only difference is that the bottle it comes in is better for the planet.

Wildlife Camera Bloopers

Close Up CowAt Hafner Vineyard, we've had fun over the years with our wildlife camera, capturing incredible glimpses of the animals that roam our ranch. Each time we check the footage, there’s a sense of excitement, sometimes it’s beautiful wildlife, other times it’s a funny surprise or a family blooper. From a bull chasing a turkey to our fourth generation helping set the camera, these moments remind us how special it is to live closely connected to nature and to witness it in its most unguarded, everyday moments. See some of our highlights.

Climate Adaptation Certification

Climate Adaptation CertificationWe received our Climate Adaptation Certification from the California Land Stewardship Institute. The result is a comprehensive plan specific to Hafner Vineyard that demonstrates how to look at various ways we can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, sequester carbon and promote climate resilience. An exciting result from the report is that we are already carbon negative, sequestering more CO2e than we emit thanks to leaving oak woodlands untouched, vineyard practices of seeding a cover crop, sourcing local and renewable clean energy and more.

Favorite Cookbooks

CookbooksMy grandmother, Mary Hafner, was the chef in the family. She and her sister taught French cooking classes from their kitchens in Berkeley (which is even how some of our patrons first learned about Hafner wine). She taught her children how to cook as well, so my sister and I benefited (and still benefit!) from Dad and Uncle Scott’s cooking. At home, when we prepare a meal, we are often thinking about which wine will pair with the meal. Here we share a few favorite cookbooks for meals that pair well with wine.

Gratitude to Sandy

Sandy Wilson at HafnerSandy Wilson has been an integral part of the Hafner Vineyard for 24 years. She’s the face behind the camera for most of the pictures in our emails and on our website. She’s billed your credit card for wine shipments, so they keep coming to you. She’s a cheerful voice on the phone, often the person who handles UPS damages or returned packages. And she’s the one with the most beautiful calligraphy, handwriting the gift notes to thousands of lucky gift recipients, along with Sarah. After nearly two and a half decades at Hafner Vineyard, Sandy is retiring, looking forward to spending more time with her husband and her expanding family which now includes six grandchildren with another on the way.
