FAQ

What is the Annual Tasting Program?

The Annual Tasting Program is the easiest and surest way for you to taste each of the three wines we produce every year.
We send you two bottles of the three vintages released annually, that’s a total of six bottles a year. Then you can taste the wine at home before buying it by the case.
The three wines are:

  • Cabernet Sauvignon in its fifth year, released in February;
  • Reserve Chardonnay in its third year, released in April;
  • Our main Chardonnay that is two years old, released in September.

Each Tasting Package includes Winemaker’s Notes on that wine and tasting notes comparing previous vintages to the current one.

How do I sign up for the Annual Tasting Program?

To join the Annual Tasting Program, go to the Annual Tasting Program page of the Buying Wine section and follow the simple instructions.

A couple of notes:

  • Mailing and shipping addresses may be different -- it is often easier for patrons to receive the Tasting Packages at a work address since the wine must be signed for by an adult.
  • You can pay for the Program with VISA, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover credit cards.
  • You are billed for all three Packages shortly after the first one is shipped.
  • Do you have any special instructions? Just let us know. We can take care of any particular details.
  • The Program is a great gift...one that spans eight months: the gift that keeps on giving!

Is your wine sold in any wine shops or stores?

Hafner wines are available exclusively from the winery or in leading California restaurants (go to Restaurants for a current list). We sell most of our wine directly to people like yourself.

Selling direct to our patrons helps keep the prices of our wines lower than other wines of comparable high quality. That also offers more personal service and maintains higher quality service from beginning to end.

How can I order your wines?

Go to Buying Wine for prices on each wine by the case or bottle. Discounts are offered for buying by the case. Buying one case of Hafner wine can save up to $36 from the single bottle price, and two cases can save you up to $72.00.

The Cabernet is available in February, the Reserve Chardonnay in April and the main Chardonnay in September. Then there are wine gifts released for the Holidays in November and our Wine Library Offering early in the New Year.

And throughout the year we have vertical collections, magnums, mixed cases and other selections available.

Of course, you must be 21 years or older to purchase our wine.

Once I order Hafner wine, how long will it take to get it?

We ship most orders out on Mondays by UPS and Federal Express to avoid having the wine spend a weekend in their warehouses. In California, your order will be delivered in 1-3 days. Shipments to other states will take about 3-5 days.

We let you know by postcard that your wine is coming several days before it is shipped. That way you can alert us to hold your wine if you are going to be away. We can delay shipments to a date convenient to you if you let us know in advance.

Do you have a Tasting Room? Are you open to the public? May I visit?

We do not have a tasting room. As a family winery with a very small staff, we cannot be open to the public except by advanced reservation. Go to Visiting under About Us for more information.

What wines do you make?

Each year we make a Cabernet Sauvignon and two Chardonnays. We chose to make these world-famous varieties because the Chardonnay and Cabernet grapes offer the greatest potential for making very fine wines and they are the King and the Queen of wines internationally.

When we started our winery in 1982 in Alexander Valley, we all agreed to stay focused on just those two wines, to maximize our effort to produce top quality wines.

For more information go to Growing Grapes and Making Wine sections.

What is the difference between your main Chardonnay and your Reserve Chardonnay?

From the same grapes, our two Chardonnays are made in different styles regarding fermentation, aging times in barrels and bottles, and in their bouquets.

The main Chardonnay shows bright pear and citrus flavors, is crisp and youthful whereas the Reserve is a rich, round wine with more subtle fruit aromas, shows a touch of toasty oak vanilla and a hint of butterscotch as the many flavors come together. The main Chardonnay is a blend of French and California styles while the Reserve is made in the French style.

To check the difference in prices, go to the Buying Wine section.

What states can you ship wine to?

We can ship wine to almost but not all states. And many of the “open” states have limits. The laws that govern the interstate shipping of wine are archaic, inconsistent and confusing. The reasons for the restrictions are historical, tax-related and competition-supported. We and most other small family wineries support efforts to resolve the blockage.

If you have questions about specific states, please e-mail or call us.

Our delivery charges are the least expensive of any winery. For a case, they range from $7.00 in California to $40.00 by air to certain states.

What restaurants serve Hafner wines?

For a complete listing of these leading California restaurants go to the Restaurants section. The list is in a "printer friendly" version and we've provided addresses and phone numbers. Bon appetit!

How long can I hold your wines?

Our Chardonnays can be aged under the right conditions for five years after the vintage year printed on the label. For our Cabernets, at least ten years after the vintage date if carefully cellared. The key is storing your wine at a steady temperature (up to 60 degrees) in an area without a lot of light.

I want to send someone a gift of your wine, how do I order?

Go to the Buying Wine section for complete instructions on sending gifts of Hafner wine. Your friends will be grateful!
