Your privacy matters to us. We've written this policy to explain, in plain language, what information we collect when you visit our website or order wine from us, how we use it, and the choices you have. You'll find a link to this page in the footer of every page on our site.
Hafner Vineyard is a family winery in Alexander Valley, and we sell our wine directly to the people at home. That means we hold information about our patrons, and we take that seriously. Our online store is powered by Shopify, so some of what follows describes Shopify's role as well as our own.
The information we collect
Information you give us. When you place an order, create an account, join our mailing list, sign up for texts or write to us, you give us information directly. Depending on what you're doing, that may include:
- Your name, shipping address, billing address, email address, and phone number
- Your date of birth, which we collect to confirm you are 21 or older
- Payment card and billing details, which are processed by Shopify's payment providers
- Account details such as your username, password, and saved preferences
- The contents of messages you send us
Like most websites, ours collects certain information whenever you visit:
- Your IP address, browser type, device type, and network information
- The pages you view, the items you look at or add to your cart, the date and time of your visit, and the site you arrived from
We use cookies for a few purposes: to keep the items in your cart as you move between pages, to keep you signed in if you have an account, and to understand in aggregate how people use our site. You can set your browser to refuse cookies, though some parts of the store may not work properly if you do.
How we use your information
We use what we collect to run the winery and serve our patrons:
- To fill your order. Processing payment, verifying that you are 21 or older, arranging shipping, handling returns and keeping records of what you've purchased.
- To stay in touch. Sending order confirmations and tracking, and news about wine releases, events, and offers by email, text or post.
- To answer you. Responding to questions, providing customer support and keeping track of our conversations with you.
- To improve the store. Understanding which pages and wines people are interested in and making the site work better.
- To keep things secure. Detecting and preventing fraud, protecting your account and keeping our systems safe.
- To meet our legal obligations. Alcohol shipping and age-verification requirements, tax and recordkeeping rules and responding to lawful requests.
How we share your information
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not rent or lease it to anyone.
We do share information in these circumstances:
- With Shopify, which hosts our store and processes information about your visit in order to provide and improve the service. Shopify may also use information from your interactions with our store, and with other merchants, to provide certain enhanced features. You can read more in the Shopify Consumer Privacy Policy.
- With RedChirp, our text messaging provider, if you have signed up for texts. RedChirp receives your mobile number and the content of your messages with us.
- With service providers who work on our behalf; payment processing, shipping carriers, email delivery and similar. They may use your information only to do the work we've asked them to do.
- When you ask us to, such as when you have wine shipped to someone else.
- When the law requires it, or to protect our rights, our patrons, or the safety of others.
- In a business transaction, such as a sale or merger of the winery.
Text messaging
If you opt in to receive text messages from us, we'll use your mobile number to stay in touch about wine releases, order updates, events, and other news you've asked to hear about.
We use RedChirp to manage these messages. When you sign up, you're giving us and RedChirp permission to send you texts, and agreeing that those messages may be recorded and stored for quality, compliance, and support purposes.
We will never sell or share mobile numbers with third parties for their own marketing.
You can unsubscribe at any time by replying STOP. For help, reply HELP or email us. Message and data rates may apply, message frequency varies, and carriers are not responsible for delayed or undelivered messages. Our full SMS Terms & Conditions have more detail.
Age
Our website and our wine are intended for adults of legal drinking age. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 21, and we don't direct our site or our marketing to them. We verify age at checkout and at text signup by asking for date of birth.
We also do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, in keeping with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. If you believe a child has given us information, please contact us and we'll remove it.
As of the date of this policy, we do not have actual knowledge that we sell or share the personal information of anyone under 16.
Your rights and choices
Depending on where you live you may have the right to:
- Know and access what personal information we hold about you
- Correct information that's inaccurate
- Delete information we hold about you
- Receive a copy of your information, or have it transferred elsewhere
- Limit the use of sensitive information, such as your payment details and account credentials
- Opt out of the sale or sharing of your information for targeted advertising
These rights aren't absolute; in some cases the law allows us to decline a request, and we may need to keep certain records (order and tax records, for example) even after a deletion request.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us. We'll verify your identity before we act on a request, and we'll respond within the time the law allows.
Global Privacy Control. If you visit our site with the Global Privacy Control signal enabled in your browser, we'll treat that as an opt-out request for that browser and device. We don't respond to other "Do Not Track" signals.
Keeping your information
We keep your information only as long as we need it. Order and transaction records are kept to meet tax and alcohol-compliance requirements. Marketing contact information is kept until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove it. Account information is kept while your account is open.
No security measure is perfect, and information sent over the internet is never entirely secure.
Links to other websites
Our site may link to websites we don't control. We're not responsible for their privacy practices, and we'd encourage you to read their policies before sharing information with them.

If you have a concern about how we handle your information, please contact us first — we'd like the chance to put it right. California residents may also contact the California Privacy Protection Agency.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll post the revised version here and update the date at the top.
