Join us to experience a personal, "behind-the-scenes" look at our family winery in the heart of the Alexander Valley. Located just outside Healdsburg, a visit here is a quiet, intimate and educational alternative to traditional tasting rooms. Tours are small and led by a family member who is actively involved in the business. We look forward to having you join us.
Hafner Started as...
prune trees
When Dick and Mary Hafner bought the ranch, it was a prune and pear orchard. Grapes were starting to be planted in the Alexander Valley, so the following year, the orchard was removed. In 1969, we began planting grapevines.

In the beginning...
Everyone helped
The family lived in Berkeley, and Dick worked for UC Berkeley, so most weekends were spent at the ranch, prepping the land, planting the vineyard and getting to know the environment.

Inspiration from Burgundy
Following his studies at UC Davis and work in Napa Valley, Parke, along with his new bride Sarah, spend a harvest in Meursault at Domaine des Comtes Lafon where much of Parke's winemaking style is inspired from.

We started with Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. This year kicks off the wines of Hafner Vineyard.
Selling direct...
No middlemen
We entered the market with Hafner wine. In 1984, Scott Hafner joined the business and implemented a decision that continues to shape our winery today: we chose not to work through distributors or other middlemen. Instead, we built relationships directly with the people who enjoy our wines. By selling directly from our family winery, we have been able to offer a better value, deliver personal customer service, and get to know generations of patrons who have become part of the Hafner Vineyard family.
Letting the Earth Do the Work
Our Caves
We drilled our wine caves into the hillside, letting the earth provide the perfect environment for aging wine. A constant 63°F temperature and 85% humidity allow our wines to mature slowly and naturally, without heating or cooling.
Reducing our impact...
no herbicides
We stopped using herbicides which is a common practice. Instead, we control weeds in the vineyard with under-the-vine cultivators and hand shovels. We also seed an insectary row with flowers that attract beneficial insects. We also seed a cover crop in every other row to help fix Nitrogen into the soil, increase biomass and reduce any fertilizer needs.

We Stayed Connected
When the world changed in 2020, we found new ways to share our wines and stay connected with our patrons. Through virtual tastings and online gatherings, we were grateful to continue opening bottles together, even from afar. The support and friendship of our patrons during this challenging time meant more than ever and reminded us of the special connections built around a shared love of wine.
Giving back to the community
Food Bank Garden
During the pandemic, we saw an opportunity to do something for our community. We turned a fallow vineyard block into a Victory Garden which has since provided thousands of pounds of fresh produce to local food banks and families in need. Giving back to the community has been a core value of our family and business whether through the food bank garden, wine donations or volunteer efforts. We are deeply grateful to be part of a community.
Two Sisters...
Third Generation joins
Kate Hafner had joined the business in 2012, and in 2025, her younger sister, Grace Hafner, began working and solidified the business into our third generation. Having the wisdom, expertise and energy of the third generation is a capstone to the work of the first two generations.
Our patrons are the heart of our small family business, and without all of your support, we simply would not be here.
